big-band/bebop legacy (1985)

Marvin Stamm, Randy Brecker, Laurie Frink, Bob Millikan, trumpets;
David Bargeron, Bob Smith, Keith OQuinn, Dave Taylor, trombones;
Bob Mintzer, Lawrence Feldman, Peter Yellin, Michael Brecker, Bob Malach,
Roger Rosenberg, saxophones; Don Grolnick, piano; Lincoln Goines, bass;
Peter Erskine, drums; Frankie Malabe, percussion.

This selection is typical of the hard-driving sound of the modern big band in the last 20 years. The arrangement uses a traditional bebop structure, AABA. Compare the aggressive, swinging solo of Randy Brecker on trumpet with the conceptual solo of his brother Michael Brecker on tenor sax. This composition by Bob Mintzer displays some amazing tutti ensemble sections. The ensemble is crisp and tight, and the performance demonstrates a command and control of a wide dynamic range.
